Chinese Calligraphy

Dating back to 200 BC, Chinese calligraphy has been existing for more than thousands of years. Using calligraphy brush and rice paper, this artistic expression of Chinese characters has been generally held in high esteem in other Asian countries, too. In this class, exchange teachers from China, Ya Liu (BCES & BEMS) and Jing Li (BEHS) will translate your names into Chinese and show you how to write your name in Chinese, in the calligraphy style. Your name in Chinese in an ancient art form, that’s definitely something you want to put a frame on.

Fun with Acrylic Painting

Join us for a fun class that begins with practicing basic drawing skills and understanding of how to mix colors. Then, move on to using different painting techniques by studying the Masters’ works. Each class will help you understand how to balance shadows and highlights to bring out details in your drawings and paintings. The paintings you do will explore different artist’s styles and the results will be memorable keepsakes to save or give as gifts. Supply list available from adult ed office. 8 weeks

No class: 4/17 & 4/24

Supply list: (Available at any art store or Michael's or Walmart••• for example)

1) 2 pencils for basic drawing (one hard eg. #2 and one soft eg. charcoal) & MULTI-PURPOSE mixed media paper (which can be used for drawing or painting with acrylics)

2) 1 set of basic brushes with different sizes (from very small & fine to 1-2" flat ends & slanted ends,... you don't need more than 5 or 6 of varying sizes and shapes)

3) 1 set of acrylic paints (make sure they have at least the primary colors: red, yellow, green, blue, black, brown and white)

4) 7 canvases (they can be gesso covered panels=hard board or gesso, covered stretched over a frame) 1 canvas size 8xl0, 4 canvases size 11x14, and 2 canvases size 12x16 or 16x20 (FYI: panels are less expensive)

5) A ‘palet knife’ (not a real knife…more like a bent butter knife)

6) A cup for water

7) Paper plates or a roll of wax paper or something else to put your paint on

Geocaching 101

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Join us for this one night workshop, find out how geocaching can be a fun, easy way to get exercise for your body and your mind! If you have a smartphone, you can geocache. In this class, we will go over all the symbols, acronyms, and types of geocaches and how to log them. There’s a whole world of geocaching information waiting to be discovered and we’ll make it easy for you. The first session will be in the classroom and in the second we will go off-site where we will set out to discover a geocache of your own.

Optional Geocaching Activity: Sat 5/11 meet at 10:00 a.m. in front of BEHS

Grow Your Own Organic Garden - MOFGA

We’ll talk about the basics of soil science and how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. We’ll cover the fundamentals of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation and how to incorporate green manures to manage nutrients in the garden. We’ll show you how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds. Learn basic weed control strategies and cultural methods for dealing with pests. We will even send you home with free seeds! All are welcome.

Materials Fee: $5 payable to MOFGA instructor night of class.
