Tour the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society and Museum
with Historical Society Volunteer Staff
Attention all history buffs! Join volunteers of the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society at the Historical Society, 100 Main St., Buxton, for a glimpse into our local history. Take a guided tour of the museum and learn about the beginnings of Buxton and Hollis leading to major industrial centers with sawmills, textile mills, leatherboard manufacturing and retail centers. See displays depicting 100 years of history for the villages of Bar Mills and West Buxton. Plenty of parking spaces available. All proceeds will go to the Historical Society. Donations are not required but are accepted for the upkeep of the museum. No discounts.
Please note this historical building is not handicap accessible and there are several stairs up to the 2nd floor.
About Buxton-Hollis Historical Society: Organized and incorporated in 1970, the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with partial support from the towns of Buxton and Hollis, Maine. The society’s purpose is to collect, preserve and publish whatever may be related to the early and late history of the towns of Buxton and Hollis, including but not limited to books, relics and articles about early settlers, records of colonial and later wars, as well as genealogical information and maps.

Other topics will include protecting your assets (insurance), advanced budgeting, and understanding the role economics plays in our financial life. Join us for this one-hour workshop as you take the next steps into adulting. Note: We will send all participants a link to the Zoom meeting prior to the start date.

Intermediate Acrylic Painting

About Sue: Susan is an artist who lived many years in France studying the Impressionists' painting methods (Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Pissarro, Picasso and Matisse). She teaches how to apply their techniques in easy to learn steps for beginners and intermediate painters as part of regular classes held at the adult ed department for enhanced learning.

Understanding Acrylics/Pigments, Mediums & Techniques
with Debra Bickford
Acrylic as a medium is broad and deep. It is much more than a substitute for oils. The ultimate chameleon, acrylics offer an enormous range of artistic outcomes beyond traditional painting.This class will introduce you to the complete range of acrylic paints, mediums and techniques. Learn how to select the right product for what you would like to achieve and the difference between the forms of pigments such as solid body and fluid. Understand what an acrylic medium is and how it can be used to increase transparency, create glazes, textures, distress a surface, adhere objects, create sheen and more. We will focus on the creation of a variety of sample boards to gain understanding of the medium. Simple techniques like glazing, underpainting and more will be covered. Access to a broad range of samples will be provided to enhance learning. Beginner to advanced students welcome. Supply list will be sent to all participants once we know class will run.
About Debra: Debra Bickford has lived in the Buxton and Hollis area for over 50 years. She has a BA from Maine College of Art and a BS in Art Education from USM. She has taught Visual Arts in Maine at the High School Level for 37 years and recently retired. She has also served on the board of the Maine Art Education Association for twenty years and was the President from 2017-19. In 2015 she was the MAEA Secondary Art Educator of the year and in 2018 she was honored with the MAEA Art Educator of the year. Debra is a painter and printmaker who loves to garden.

About Elly: Eleanor “Elly” Dominguez, Esq. joined Ainsworth, Thelin & Raftice, P.A. in 2014, focusing on elder law, estate planning and estate administration. In this field of law, Elly gets to know the people she is working with and learns from their life experiences. Her compassion for seniors is evident in meetings - listening to clients stories and helping them when they may be feeling their worst. Elly has been an accredited attorney for the preparation, presentation and prosecution of claims for veterans’ benefits before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs since 2018. “For me, it’s so nice to be able to work with seniors because I have such a love and affection for those who served and protected us, like my dad did for 20 years and like my brother still does”. She is enrolled in the Certificate in Native Plants and Ecological Horticulture Program run by the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. As a Master Gardener Volunteer, Elly continues to participate in the Garden Angel program, helping seniors who are no longer physically able to garden. In her spare time, Elly enjoys bowling in a league, gardening, taking day hikes, and treasure hunting with her metal detector. Most of her free time is spent with her husband and catering to their two cats and two dogs.

About Marjorie: Marjorie began her career at Community Concepts in 2008. Since 2021, she has managed the Homeownership Center, overseeing day-to-day operations. Recently, she took on the role of Client Services Manager, overseeing both the Business Technical Assistance team and the Homeownership Center. Marjorie continues to provide housing counseling to prepare customers for homeownership, foreclosure intervention counseling, financial coaching, and teaches homebuyer and financial education classes. She enjoys helping people achieve their financial and homeownership goals. She holds several certifications, including HUD Certified Housing Counselor, Certified Foreclosure Intervention Counselor, Financial Coach, HoMEworks Certified Educator, USDA Rural Development Loan Packager, and NMLS. She is currently a member of the HoMEworks Education Board of Directors.
